Most of us have perfected our makeup routines, but styling our own hair can be a bit more challenging. If you have a big event coming up or just want to have that just-from-the-salon look, here a few tips for getting a pro quality look.

Start with a Clarifying Shampoo
Before getting a salon look, you need to start with a clean base. By using a clarifying shampoo, you’ll remove excess oil and ensure your hair is ready to accept styling products without getting greasy or weighed down.
Select the Right Products
Depending on what style you’re looking to do, selecting the right products is essential to achieving your look. One mistake many people make when styling their own hair is not using the right products. Hair products help keep your hair in place, whether you want to get a sleek look or bouncy curls, products help lock the look in place, so never skip out on quality products.
Know Your Heat Tools
Salon looks almost always require some kind of heat tool, so you’ll want to understand how to use a blowdryer, flat iron, and curling iron. Most styles start with a great blow out, so we recommend using a round brush to blow out hair lifting the roots as you dry to add volume. Even if you’re doing a sleek look, you’ll want to add a little volume to keep your hair from looking too flat. We understand using heat tools can be intimidating, but thanks to YouTube, there are an array of instructional videos on how to do a salon blowout, how to curl your hair etc. We recommend digging around on YouTube for tips; it takes a few minutes and you’ll learn skills that you’ll use over and over again.
Bobby Pins Are Your Best Friend
No matter how secure your style feels, it’s wise to use bobby pins to keep things in place. We also recommend carrying extra bobby pins on you in case your style starts to fall.
Always Use a Finishing Hair Spray

Finishing with a hair spray is essential to keeping your style in place for hours. The stronger hold the hair spray has the better, so we recommend a finishing spray that is meant to hold hair in place for longer periods of time. Luckily, most modern hair spray formulas are lightweight yet will hold your hair in place. If your hair tends to get oily, we also recommend finishing it with a bit of dry shampoo on the roots to keep your hair from getting weighed down. If your look is sleek and straight, we also recommend finishing your hair with a shine spray.
