Today we’re going to discuss one of this season’s most beloved -and feared- trends: the crop top. Yes, this barely there top can induce fear in even the most savvy fashion girl, so we want to cover how to pull off a crop top. Yes, even if you’re not a size 2!
Types of Crop Tops
First, let’s cover the different types of crop tops. There’s a varying range of lengths from super short to just above the belly button. Fits include tight, t-shirt, bra-style, loose/flowy, and boxy. Even though the crop top has been a trend for a few seasons now, the boxy crop top is the new “it” top for 2014. Luckily, this latest boxy trend can be pulled off by just about anyone!
How To Pair Crop Tops
The most universally flattering way to wear a crop top is to pair it with high-waisted bottoms. High waists will give you coverage allowing you to wear a crop top without feeling naked. Wearing a high waist is also a more updated look. (i.e a short tight crop top paired with low waisted pants can take you into the hip-hop Aaliyah ‘Are You That Somebody” circa ’98 era -which is perfectly fine if that’s what you’re going for, otherwise high waists are more “today.”)
Here are a few looks that are flattering on everyone. So go for it! Don’t be afraid to rock a crop top this season.
Midi Skirts
If you want to be super on-trend try a crop top with a midi skirt. A true midi skirt goes past the knees and you can find them in aline, fitted, and circle styles. This look is super polished and great for a spring wedding. Try: Topshop ‘Ballerina ‘ Tulle Midi Skirt, $100
High Waist Print Pants
Print pants are all the rage right now. These funky, fun pants will instantly bring your style into 2014. Try: Wayf Graphic Print Wide Leg Pants $58
Tailored Narrow Trousers
This look gives you a throwback ’50s Audrey Hepburn vibe. It’s great for going casual day or night. Try with a bralette style like Kristen Stewart or get more coverage with a boxy top. Try: Eileen Fisher Ankle Length Silk Pants, $258
Skater Skirts
If you like your hemlines a little shorter try a fun circle skirt. For a playful look try a printed skirt or switch it up and go with a solid skirt and a print crop top. We love this look with mixed, complementary prints. Try: JOA Geometric Print Skater Skirt, $44
Long Flowy Skirts
Pairing a crop top with a flowy maxi skirt is the easy, breezy way of staying fashionably comfortable any time of day. Pair with a sweater crop like Jessica Alba or throw on some flip flops and a shorter, tighter crop top for an easy beach look. Try: Blu Pepper Lace Maxi Skirt , $62
