Navigating the fashion and beauty space can be difficult. Simply Stylist, an annual fashion & beauty conference that takes place across several major cities helps close the gap and bring fashion editors, bloggers, and designers together. The event was hosted by E! Network’s Catt Sadler who shared a wealth of information throughout the event about her start in the media and fashion business. From her humble beginnings as a local news anchor in Indianapolis to her her big break on E! Network, Sadler gave attendees insight into navigating the fashion and media business successfully.
The event kicked off with a brunch hosted by HauteLook as Elissa Kravetz of The Farley Project gave an inspiring keynote about “Finding Your Passion.” Next, came a jam packed day of panels that included Laurel Pinson (Editor-in-Chief of Stylecaster), Polly Blizter (Beauty Blitz), Jay Manuel (renowed makeup artist and host) and The Hills’ Lo Bosworth, amongst others. Topics ranged from marketing your blog to transitioning into on-camera work to technical tricks and SEO.
One session that really stood out was with Jay Manuel, who relayed the adversity he dealt with in his early twenties when he was diagnosed with a rare condition that left him bound to a wheelchair. He said the experience made him stronger and more tenacious than ever. It was touching to hear and see the gratitude present in his voice and face as he told the story. He went on to explain how he got his big break by blindly submitting mock-up beauty ads to agencies. One session he did with model Bridget Moyhanan got him the call that catapulted him to success -further proving that persistence will always pay off!
The panels were followed by cocktails hosted by EXPRESS, shopping, manicures, music, mingling and “breakout sessions” which included 15 minute keynotes from several entrepreneurs and fashion professionals including Revolve Clothing’s Social Media Director, Ashley Torres; eDrop-Off’s founder, Corri McFadden, Executive VP of Sales at Priv, Courtney Jerden, COO of DNA Events, April Luca, Style and Fit Expert, Jenny Altman; Jacey Duprie from Damsel in Dior, founder of That Madonna Girl, Michelle Madonna, Hilary Peterson from Lyst, Celebrity Stylist, Rachel Wirkus and founder of Fohr Card, James Nord.
