How To Avoid and Get Rid of Puffy Eyes and Dark Circles

Most of us deal with some sort of puffiness in the morning. It’s obnoxious, but very common. Salty foods, alcohol, and sleeping face down are just a few of the culprits of dreaded puffy eyes and dark circles.  Here are a few things you can do to both avoid eye puffiness and get rid of it.

Sleep On An Incline

inclineStack at least 2 pillows at a 90 degree angle and sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated. This helps stop fluid from accumulating under your eyes -a main cause of morning puffiness. You’ll also want to avoid sleeping on your stomach, as this causes fluid to pool in your face over night, resulting in overall face puffiness.

Avoid Salty Foods & Alcohol

This is probably pretty obvious -salt and alcohol causes your body to retain water which leads to bloating and puffiness. If you need to look your best in the morning, it’s wise to avoid both of this puffiness culprits.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration leads to water retention, which leads to puffiness. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Preferably at least eight 8 oz. glasses per day.

Topical Caffeine

Caffeine helps circulate the blood and firm the skin. Use a couple of cold tea bags, chilled coffee grounds (like our DIY espresso mask) or buy an eye cream that contains caffeine. It will do wonders for undereye puffiness and dark circles!

Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic drainage massage helps dissipate fluid in your face. By pushing on a few pressure points in your face, you can drastically reduce undereye bags and puffiness! Check out the tutorial below:

Facial Yoga

Most people aren’t aware of facial exercises (also known as facial yoga)! Facial exercises are an excellent way of keeping your face healthy and toned. By targeting a few key muscles in your face you can decreases eye puffiness, facial sagging, and improve overall tone. Go here for our recommended facial yoga tutorial.

Anything Cold

Newsflash: anything cold can help reduce swelling and eyebags!  If you need a quick fix, use a bag of frozen peas, cotton balls dipped in ice water, potato/cucumber slices, crushed ice in a ziplock bag, a cold bottle, a chilled spoon -any of these thing will help with eye puffiness.
