If you’ve ever lived in a small space (hello, New Yorkers!) you know how valuable and essential good organization is. It can really make or break your living space and every square foot counts when it comes to making the best of a tight situation. Here are a few tips that will help you optimize that little, cozy place you call home.
Think Up
First things first, when working with a small space always think up rather than out. Our homes contain a lot of “airspace” that often goes unused. So, when starting your organization, think of ways you can build upward.
Buy Double Duty Storage Furniture
When it comes to small spaces, double duty furniture is key. You can find many beds, coffee tables, shelving, ottomans etc. that provide hidden storage.

Utilize Door & Wall Space

Doors, the inside of cabinets, the walls of your closet etc. all make perfect areas for installing additional storage hooks and shelving. Over-the-door racks are perfect for utilizing unused door and wall space.
Get a Stowaway or Loft Bed
Beds often take up a good chunk of space, so if you can get a murphy, cabinet, or loft bed you can double your living space in a snap.

Store Away Seasonal Clothing
Storing away any seasonal clothing items you don’t need will open up space in your closet, keeping things organized and much less cramped. Utilize under bed storage bags to open up additional space and keep your items stowed away and dust-free.

Use a Bookcase Divider
If you live in a studio or loft a bookcase is a great way to break up the room and gain some privacy. Plus, it provides additional storage. A win-win!

Over The Toilet Shelving
If you’re lacking storage in the bathroom, try using an over the toilet shelving unit. Most require little assembly and can simply be placed over your toilet, providing additional shelving quickly.
