Managing unruly, frizz-prone hair during the humid summer months can be laborious and time-consuming. Especially if you have that “in-between” hair type that isn’t quite curly, but not quite straight. This is the type of hair that is the most frustrating! You don’t get those gorgeous, springy, spiral curls and you don’t get easy, straight hair either. If you have the type of hair that seems to be in a perpetual identity crisis; where regular products and techniques don’t work on it -this guide is for you!
Keratin Products
If you have frizzy, curly, unmanageable hair, keratin can quite literally change your life! Reparative keratin products like treatments, serums, masks, shampoos and conditioners can reduce dry time and help tame unruly locks. Semi-permanent Brazilian keratin treatments that last up to 4 months can also greatly improve the health of your hair while relaxing it and reducing frizz. The best thing about Brazilian keratin treatments is that they relax rather than straighten -so you’ll get soft, manageable hair without it being flat and stick straight. Keep in mind, some Brazilian keratin treatments contain harmful ingredients like formaldehyde, so be sure to check beforehand to make sure your treatment is free of toxic ingredients. Avoid Sulfates
Curly/wavy hair is usually on the drier side and sulfate-based products tend to strip the hair shaft, causing unruly hair to become more frizzy. Avoid shampoos and conditioners that contain sulfate. Most products will indicate they’re sulfate-free, but be sure to check the ingredient list just in case.
Avoid or Reduce Blowdrying
It took us years to figure out that all that blowdrying actually made our hair MORE frizzy! That’s right, heat and curly hair can be a bad combo. Unless you’re going for the pin-straight look, spray your hair with a leave-in conditioner and gently blowdry your hair to about 40% dry, then let the rest of your hair air dry. The trick to soft, effortless waves is to pull hair back into a loosely tied low bun or braid until your hair is dry. Once you release the bun or braid you’ll have gorgeous frizz-free waves.
Skip a Wash
Unless your hair is super duper oily, you shouldn’t wash it everyday. In fact, our second day hair actually looks better than our first day hair! Skip a wash and use dry shampoo to fluff up hair and sop up any oiliness. We Love: Aquage Dry Shampoo Style Extending Spray, $15
Oils & Deep Hydration
Most experts will agree that the key to combating frizz is keeping hair deeply moisturized. Oils like coconut, argan, extra virgin olive oil etc. are your best friend! Use them frequently to keep your hair healthy and frizz-free. For deepest hydration apply oils overnight or put a plastic shower cap over your head and use a blowdryer to create a “hot oil” type treatment that will further penetrate the hair shaft. You can also use a nickel-sized amount on wet or damp hair to help control curls. Just keep in mind if you’re using oil to style your hair, use sparingly to avoid making your hair too oily and weighed down. If you’re using oil as an overnight or hot oil treatment, apply liberally.
